Everyone's doing it

Well, everyone else got a blog, so what the heck. I now have one too. Not that I have many important things to say, but maybe if I start blogging often I'll start doing more writing, too.
I'll keep this first entry short.
I have a silly question for your consideration. Consider the conflict between pirates and ninjas, well documented in nerdology. Both groups are technically evil, but fully committed to the eradication of the other. Is this the case with all evil organizations? Is the true enemy of Goldfinger Dr. No? Will the Brotherhood of Mutants ultimately focus its energies on destroying Galactus?
I mean, George Bush Sr. and George W. have ultimately toppled Saddam, giving us a real world example of two evil organizations duking it out. Can we expect Putin to eradicate Kim Jong Il?
Is there a place for heroes when villains take care of each other?
Really, I think Lois Lane had the right idea. This world doesn't need a Superman.
James is gonna kill me for that one.

You're right, it seems there is no role for heroes... or maybe, the evil that wins is the hero? They do say that the victors write the history books...

But what if there is no "win" per se? In the pirates vs. ninjas example, for instance, both groups are in constant conflict, with no end to the struggle as successive generations of pirates and ninjas are inducted into the ranks and indroctrinated with the dogma that the other group must die. It's a never ending battle for supremacy.
In that case, there is no "victor" so who then writes the history book?

pirates would win as they have more spunk.

and yay - Jer joins the blog world!

oh yeah, and p.s. this is Linds. Jer...can you change your settings so non-bloggers can comment ?(unless...are you a blog snob?)

I still don't really see how there can be a pirates vs. ninjas debate. I love pirates as much as the next guy, but ninjas are so obviously superior. It's ridiculous to even entertain a discussion on this topic.

Nice blog title by the way. I share your love on Winston Churchill.

Okay, Linds, I changed the settings. But given that I'm so new at this whole technomology, I can't be blamed that I didn't realize non bloggers couldn't post.
Oh, and the discussion's not about whether ninjas or pirates are superior, but whether we should leave evil to combat itself, rather than assigning heroes to the task.
Besides, pirates are far more awesome. One word. Parrots.

Oh my friend, the world does indeed need a Superman. So lets say, you leave pirates and ninjas to duke it out on each other, fine. It would probably take place on a pirate ship in the night, no harm no foul (except the parrots would be the first to go). But supposing Dr. No and Goldfinger have it out, their large scale battle would encompass cities and such, so what about the innocent people caught in the crossfire? That's where Superman (and other heroes) would come in handy.

Dr. No and Goldfinger wouldn't flinch at killing those citizens going about their daily lives; the teachers, the store clerks, the dental hygenists. A hero would swoop in and protect them; stopping those falling buildings and fixing earthquake fault lines. That's why the world needs heroes.

If the bad guys are forever locked in a battle, and are not able to pursue their other evil agendas, then it seems we don't need heroes. But James is right, what about the innocents? We need a hero that can step in a quash the ninjas and the pirates.

Although this ninjas would probably use their powers to dissapear, and then it would just be the pirates who were killed... but then, what can you really do about ninjas?

Ah, but the problem with needing heroes to protect the innocent is that you need so gosh darned many of them to do the job properly. The other problem is that the badguys will usually pull a green goblin and force the hero to choose to save one innocent, or a whole bucketload, and only if the particular hero in question has spiderman-esque speed and skill will he be able to save all of them.
Frankly, I think the innocents are going to have more luck saving themselves.
